Small Business Saturday and a Bit of a Gift Guide

Today is Small Business Saturday which is something that speaks to my heart. This time of year is full of sales and promotions and buy! buy! buy! and it just makes sense to me to try to focus some of my spending on businesses who are built from the ground up, who believe the quality and heart of their product is more important than mass production, and who are the result of someone's visions, blood, sweat, and tears.

So! Without further ado, here are some of my favourite small businesses, artists, and makers, or ones I'm interested in but haven't purchased from (yet. I mean, it's Small Business Saturday, right? I should probably check out some new small businesses.).

The Uncommon Good

Wooden pieces (from Christmas tree ornaments right up to dining room suites) made from wood salvaged from pre-1940s homes in Vancouver that are being deconstructed or demolished. The lumber used in these homes are typically first-growth trees that would have been 300 - 1,000 years old. If the wood isn't salvaged, it ends up in the landfill. I've got a beautiful British Columbia piece hanging on my kitchen wall and I can't wait to add some Christmas ornaments to my collection this year.

Snugabell Mom & Baby Gear

I'm lucky enough to do some work for Snugabell so I see firsthand the commitment and dedication that goes into helping mamas and babies. I bought a PumpEase hands-free pumping bra shortly after Grady was born because I had an oversupply and pumping became part of my daily routine. It was one of those items that felt frivolous until I actually tried it and realize how crucial it was to my sanity, especially when I went back to work and was pumping multiple times a day. If you shop Snugabell's website now through 11/30/15 you can use code SNUGTHNX for a whopping 40% off Snugabell and PumpEase branded items (pro tip: take advantage of this deal; PumpEase are never discounted this heavily).

Good Husbands Apparel Ltd.

I've not bought anything from this local Vancouver company before but that's about to change. This Mountains Bodysuit is adorable and I'm pretty sure I need it in my life. Code SHOPSMALL earns you 30% off today.

Mama Gems

Mama Gems makes understated, stylish teething necklaces for mamas who don't want to wear something that screams "TEETHING NECKLACE" around their necks. Founder Michaela's story pulls on my heartstrings and I can't do it justice so pop on over to her site for a read. Code SMALLBIZSATURDAY nets you 15% off your order until midnight tonight. Finnegan in Mint is on my Christmas wish list this year (hint, hint).
